How can a stock's closing value not equal the next day's open value?

In looking at Open/High/Low/Close Bar chart it seems that one day's closing stock value can be different from the next day's open value. How can this be? O.K. So it can open at a different value than it closed based on what happend overnight. Then how come it almost always opens at nearly the same value?
